Kindergarten

Hard to believe he is old enough, but I registered Evan for Kindergarten for fall 2012. Kindergarten out here is half day and he could either go in the AM (9-12) or PM (1-4). We are hoping for the AM option but I am sure Evan will love either!

Evan’s Sculpture

Evan brought home a sculpture that he made in school out of toothpicks and “Dots”. The teachers had each kid name their sculpture and Evan named his “The sculpture of activity”. The sculpture lasted at home just long enough to get this photo and then he quickly de-constructed it so he could eat the candy Dots.

Love in My Eyes

Evan came home the other day from school and told me:

I looked at Molly and I saw love in my eyes

I thought Evan had a crush on one of the little girls in his class but then just yesterday he told me he was going to ask one of his neighbors to marry him in 50 weeks. Look out ladies – Evan has arrived.

The Reading Pool

Evan’s teacher sent us this picture of Evan and his two friends reading in the “reading pool” in pre-school yesterday. The kids are all wearing safari hats as well as this week is “Safari Week” in school.

Evan had his first day at pre-school today. He has his same teachers as he did last year and he was quite excited to go back. Hard to believe the next time we take this picture he will be going to Kindergarten!

Mommy Broke My Heart

Today I picked Evan up from school and happened to notice him not listening to the teacher when they were wrapping up. I tried to talk to him about listening but he was…not listening. I had to stop at McDonalds to pick up Denise lunch on our way home and although Evan kept asking for a kids meal while we were in the drive thru I did not get him anything. I told him good listeners got good things and bad listeners did not always get what they want. Although I am not wild about making McDonalds a treat, let’s face it, it is.

He cried all the way home when he realized I was serious and actually did not get him anything and he pouted as he walked from my car in the driveway to the front door. When he walked in the front door he had a sad face. Denise asked him right away if he had a bad day at a school to which he said:

no, Mommy broke my heart.

He then started crying and went to his room and shut the door. Of course that broke my heart so after a few minutes I went in and talked to him about listening and told him I loved him then invited him to my office to eat lunch which made him much happier.

More Fun at Pre-School

Yesterday as I went to pick up Evan, one of Evan’s pre-school teachers said she had to tell me a funny story. Apparently the kids were learning a song that involved a row boat and rowing motions (not row row row your boat…). As the kids were doing the rowing motions – the teacher noticed Evan was not doing the motions so she asked him why he was not doing them. Even replied:

“I am not rowing because my boat is not a row boat it’s a motor boat!”

The teacher said she and the other teachers could not help but to laugh at his comment – as did I when I heard it.

This is similar to another great Evan comment a week or so ago when I dropped him off wearing his brand new yellow sneakers. The teacher told Evan “man I cannot see your feet!” (thinking that they could definitely not see Evan’s feet in general (in his shoes) because his shoes were so bright). Evan replied:

“That’s because they are in my shoes!”

These comments sound exactly like something I would say as a child! He is quick – and will surely give me a run for my money. Good thing I have been waiting to meet my match ;)

What Happened at Pre-school?

Each Tuesday and Thursday I look forward to coming home and hearing about what Evan said at preschool – I always hope for good news.

Last week we heard about how Evan corrected his teacher while she read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. It seems she is not a big fan of the book and she was trying to skip some pages or at least some words to get through the fairly long book quicker. Well Evan, who practically has the book memorized, mentioned several times that she was saying the “wrong word” (one of his catch phrases) and skipping pages. She loves Evan but all you teachers know how we do not appreciate the student who constantly correct us – hopefully his cuteness helps her look past the corrections. :)

E in front of school

Today was E’s first day of pre-school (how time flies!). For the first day – the school wanted to have the parents go with the kids for one hour to give everyone an idea of what to expect. Everything is scheduled – which is great for E as he has been able to do pretty much whatever he wants whenever he wants during the day (pluses and minuses). As soon as you get there each day – the kids have to wash their hands and can then go into the back room and freely play for 15 minutes. There is a sand station, a table for Play-Doh, a few easels for painting, and a little house/kitchen area.

E playing

When the fifteen minutes are up – the kids then go into the front room where they all sit around in a circle and sing some songs and listen to the teacher read a book. When that is done – they then learn about the craft for the day that they are going to make (it relates to the book they just read), and can go and play either in the front or back room and/or make the craft. After awhile of that – the teacher rings a bell which signals the kids to put all toys away and go back into the front room for some final activities (more songs).

We live a few blocks from his school so we walked there and back on a beautiful fall day. Evan looks forward to going back – and so do I…since I forgot his backpack on the first day. Hey – at least I remembered it…after initially forgetting it. ;)
